Jardine Aviation Services
8. How can we shape the future of labour-intensive work in confined spaces via robotics solutions?
About Jardine Aviation Services
Jardine Aviation Services Group (JASG) is a market leader in providing customised ground handling services in Hong Kong International Airport, including passenger services, ramp operations, baggage and cargo handling, flight control, load planning and crew care. Serving close to 15 million passengers and a million tonnes of cargo pre-pandemic times, JASG is the trusted partner when airlines fly to Hong Kong, be it traditional carriers or newly start up airlines.
Challenge overview
Located within a 5-hour flight time radius to more than half of the worldwide population, Hong Kong is a major hub for both passenger and cargo operations. While there is ample space to stand within the passenger cabin, cargo spaces are small and go only up to half an adult’s height.
Being one of the major cargo hubs in the world means besides passengers’ baggage, there are a lot of heavy cargo coming through Hong Kong, and staff will have to crawl into confined spaces to load and unload baggage and heavy cargo in and out of the aircraft.
We are seeking a solution that can help staff easily handle heavy items in confined spaces and that can be assembled and disassembled within minutes, ultimately replacing majority of human physical work. This aims to increase work safety and reduce injuries rate, increase planning accuracy, and create job sustainability.
Furthermore, we aim to encourage a mindset shift from a male-dominant industry to embracing different gender and abilities who can also work in labour-intensive environments.
What will we bring?
- Mentors: Business leaders that have a wealth of knowledge in the challenge area
- Operational information: Cargo tonnage per flight, aircraft turnaround time and requirements, etc
Judging criteria
Your proposed solution will be evaluated based on:
- Innovation
- Relevancy
- Feasibility
- Impact
Specifically, we will focus on the solution’s ability to move and elevate heavy cargo (irregular shaped and at least 30 kgs per piece) within confined spaces. Ideally, it can be assembled and disassembled easily within minutes and be deployed throughout the day without long charging hours.
